The Inaugural Crested Butte Cocktail Competition

Which local bartender will claim the title of the Valley's best? In this head-to-head competition, contestants create a killer cocktail using Montanya Distillers’ obsessively crafted rum in the quest for county-wide bragging rights. Majestic Theater, Princess Wine Bar, The Slogar, Double Shot Cyclery and Marchitelli’s Gourmet Noodle have all thrown their hat in the ring. A panel of world-renowned rum experts, including Crested Butte’s own Karen Hoskin (Co-Founder and Co-Owner of Montanya Distillers), with visiting spirits experts Daniel Veliz and Michelle Glancy, decide which bartender emerges victorious. Sample each competitor’s cocktail while watching the bartenders compete in front of the judges, and cast your vote to crown a People’s Choice Champion. Hearty bites by Montanya’s own Chef Rose Reyes fill the belly while live music with a Local Musician’s Showcase liven up the festivities. Sponsored by Montanya Distillers. At the Depot.

Karen Hoskin is well-known as a vanguard of the rebirth of American Rum. When she started a craft distillery in the Rocky Mountains in 2008, few people knew there was a strong American rum tradition, not to mention a mountain tradition. Craft cocktails were not yet a major U.S. trend and rum was considered the wild west of spirits. Karen has helped change that perception, steering Montanya Distillers to accomplish double-digit growth every year. In 2019, that success helped the distillery secure minority investment from Constellation Brands in her company, which Karen will leverage to build the company's distribution footprint worldwide.

Daniel J. Veliz
A 23-year veteran of the food and beverage industry, Daniel’s experience includes stints at the world-famous Vesper Bar in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, and the San Francisco Chronicle’s “2016 Best Cocktail Bar in San Francisco.” Daniel has created award winning cocktails and cocktail programs all over the world, most recently working as the Global Beverage Director for Trader Vic’s Worldwide.
Michelle Glancy has two decades of hospitality experience in bars such as the House of Blues, Williams & Graham, Occidental and RiNo Yacht Club. She has been proudly involved with Speed Rack, a speed bartending competition for women, for the past two years, and most recently won the national Rogue Spirits Cocktail Competition. Currently, Michelle is a part of the bar team at Seven Grand and Pony Up, both in Denver.
